Consumers plan to spend an average of $890.49 per person on holiday gifts, food, decorations, and other seasonal items this year, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF)’s annual survey conducted with Prosper Insights & Analytics. The total marks the second-highest spending level in the survey’s 23-year history, just 1.3% below last year’s record of $901.99.
“Time and again, Americans prioritize spending on loved ones for holidays despite economic uncertainty,” says NRF vice president of industry and consumer insights Katherine Cullen. “With more consumers planning to seek out sale events this year, retailers are prepared to deliver on deals and value to ensure consumers have everything they need to make the holiday special.”
The survey found that 91% of U.S. adults plan to celebrate a winter holiday such as Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa. Of their total holiday budgets, consumers expect to spend $627.93 on gifts for family and friends, with the remaining $262.56 going toward food, candy, decorations, and greeting cards.
Early shopping continues to be popular, with 42% of respondents planning to start before November, primarily to spread out spending or reduce last-minute stress. However, 60% said they expect to complete their shopping in December.
Tariffs are influencing shopper behavior, with 85% anticipating higher prices and 63% planning to make most of their purchases during Thanksgiving weekend, up from 59% last year.
Consumers plan to shop across a variety of destinations, led by online stores (55%), followed by grocery stores (46%), department stores (44%), and discount stores (42%). The most requested gifts this year include gift cards (50%), clothing or accessories (46%), books and media (27%), personal care or beauty items (23%), and electronics (22%).
