The American Optometric Association (AOA) Foundation — Optometry Cares and the PERC Alliance have named Danielle Richardson, OD, and Kayla Campbell, OD, as recipients of the 2025 Golden Opportunity Award. The announcement was made during Optometry’s Meeting on June 26 in Minneapolis.
The award, established in honor of David Golden, OD, recognizes early-career optometrists who demonstrate leadership, clinical excellence, and a commitment to expanding care for underserved communities through independent practice ownership. Each recipient receives $50,000 in financial support toward their practice.
Dr. Richardson is preparing to open Clarity Eye Aesthetics, a wellness-focused optometric practice in West Hollywood, CA. The practice will specialize in advanced dry eye treatment and holistic care, with a focus on culturally inclusive services. In addition to clinical care, Dr. Richardson plans to incorporate educational and mentorship initiatives aimed at increasing representation within the profession.
"This award accelerates my dream to create a healing space where patients receive not just care, but connection," says Dr. Richardson. "It's about transforming the patient experience and paving the way for the next generation of underrepresented professionals."
In Vienna, WV, Dr. Campbell is acquiring Vienna Eye Clinic, a long-standing practice that serves Wood County and surrounding rural areas. Her plans include expanding medically focused services such as diabetic eye care and dry eye management while developing outreach programs and satellite clinics to improve access for residents in rural communities.
"Growing up in rural West Virginia shaped my heart and my purpose," says Dr. Campbell. "This award will allow me to bring modern, compassionate care to those who need it most and build a legacy of mentorship and service."
Now in its second year, the Golden Opportunity Award aims to support independent optometry practices that prioritize community impact, equity in care, and professional mentorship.
