Getting patients of any age to properly wear and care for contact lenses can be a big challenge. It is especially difficult when dealing with pediatric patients.

To learn more, we reached out to two experts: Jennifer Lyerly, OD, who specializes in contact lenses at TrueVision Eye Care, in Cary, NC, and educator Phernell Walker, MBA, ABOM, LDO. A renowned speaker and owner of Pure Optics, he is also on the boards of the OAA and ABO-NCLE. Here they share a few suggestions regarding compliance.
Talk It Up

Here’s some of what Dr. Lyerly says is most important to tell young patients:
✔ Keep clean. “Wash and dry your hands before touching the lenses or your eyes, clean them properly (with a rub if using multipurpose solutions and wear reusable lenses), and keep the lenses away from water.”
✔ Fresh is best. “Daily disposables are safest contact lenses, with the lowest rate of eye infection. If you do wear reusable lenses, throw them away on time, and replace your storage case every 3 months.”
✔ Trust the doctor. “If you are having discomfort, redness, blurry vision, or just have a question, call us!” Make sure they understand you are their trusted source of help and information at any time.
Put It in Writing

Walker agrees with those suggestions and also recommends giving parents a copy of “Tips for Successful Contact Lens Wear.” Here’s some of what is included:
✔ Never sleep in lenses. “Unless it’s for myopia control or othoK, sleeping in lenses increases infection risks. Establish a routine to remove them.”
✔ Follow the schedule. “Use charts or reminders to wear them only for the recommended duration.”
✔ Never swim with lenses. “Bacteria in water can cause serious infections. Wear goggles instead.”
✔ Be mindful of allergies. “If discomfort occurs, consult an eyecare professional, who may suggest special lenses or solutions.”
Don’t stop the reminders as patients age, concludes Dr. Lyerly. “Make sure you [bring up] wear and care at every annual exam,” she says. Her point? “To make sure they don't fall into complacency as they age!”
