The South Carolina Optometric Physicians Association (SCOPA) has opened applications for its 2026 Student Scholarship Program, which supports South Carolina students pursuing careers in optometry. Since the program launched in 2010, the association has awarded more than $23,000 in scholarships to 14 students pursuing degrees as Doctors of Optometry.
Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by May 30. Scholarship recipients will be selected by the SCOPA Board of Directors based on academic performance, references, commitment to the profession, and other application criteria. Recipients are expected to be notified by June 30.
The scholarship program is open to first-year through fourth-year optometry students enrolled full-time at an accredited school or college of optometry. Eligible applicants must either be related to a SCOPA member, be South Carolina residents, or hold a South Carolina contract seat. Applicants must also maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and remain in good academic standing.
SCOPA said it has notified eligible schools with contracted seats for South Carolina residents, including Southern College of Optometry, University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Optometry, and University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry.
“As South Carolina continues to prioritize access to quality eye care, investing in the next generation of Doctors of Optometry is more important than ever,” said Dr. Kevin Campbell, president of SCOPA. “This scholarship program reflects SCOPA’s commitment to supporting students who are dedicated to improving vision and eye health for communities across our state.”
In addition to scholarships, SCOPA said it provides optometry students with complimentary registration to its annual meeting and opportunities to participate in association events throughout the year focused on networking, continuing education, mentorship, and professional development.
