The International Opticians Association (IOA) has announced the 6 finalists for the 2026 IOA SILMO International Optician of the Year Award, which recognizes opticians for their contributions to the profession and their role in helping patients select optimal eyewear and vision care solutions. This year's finalists are 2024 #EBGameChanger Cira Collins (United States), Jessica Gowing (United Kingdom), Martyn Howlett (United Kingdom), Karen Michaelson (United States), Janine Santiago (Canada), and Steve Stenersen (New Zealand).

The finalists represent a range of contributions to the profession, including pediatric dispensing, care for patients with complex needs, dementia and traumatic brain injury advocacy, community-focused practice, professional education, and innovation in opticianry. Some notable initiatives among the finalists include:

• Jessica Gowing’s 3D printing of bespoke frames for children with craniofacial conditions and other complex facial differences who cannot find an adequate fit with conventional frames

• Martyn Howlett’s individualized approach that helps improve spectacle acceptance and successful wear among children and young people with learning disabilities, autism, and complex needs

• Karen Michaelson’s work that has brought dementia, traumatic brain injury, and cognitive change awareness into professional optical conversations

According to IOA President Helen Whitaker, finalists will next submit a dossier that documents their achievements across 8 evaluation areas: professionalism, communication, entrepreneurship, innovation, specialization, creativity, engagement, and advocacy. An international panel of industry experts will review the submissions before selecting the winner.

The 2026 International Optician of the Year will be announced during SILMO in Paris. In addition to the award, the recipient will receive a trip to SILMO 2027.
