A CLOSER LOOK
Acuvue Goes Monthly
Johnson & Johnson Vision Care has entered the monthly contact lens wear category with ACUVUE VITA Brand contact lenses, a 30-day-wear lens with HydraMax technology. The technology helps maintain hydration through optimal density and distribution of beneficial lipids throughout the lens.
ACUVUE VITA has a new, noncoated silicone hydrogel formulation. This helps to maintain lens hydration all month long, enhance comfort through a unique Infinity Edge design, and block approximately 93.4% of UVA rays and 99.8% of UVB rays, according to Johnson & Johnson Vision Care.
“Patient insights helped us recognize the challenges that monthly wearers face and drove our commitment to provide them with a meaningful solution. We know that a change in lens hydration may contribute to a decline in monthly lens comfort, so we focused our efforts on designing a lens that helps maximize and maintain lens hydration, providing reliable, superior comfort all month long.”
—ZOHRA FADLI, PH.D., Global Platform Lead Reusable Sphere, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc.
The product was developed because consumer research indicated that monthly wearers were experiencing comfort-related issues at some point during the month, and that some were using “compensating behaviors” like re-wetting drops or taking breaks from wearing the lenses.

Fast and Blue
Super Optical International has added a clear, blue-light-filtering lens to its portfolio that, like its other lenses, is for use exclusively with its all-in-one in-office surfacing system, FastGrind. BlueShield lenses will be officially released at Vision Expo West this month.
According to Super Optical, BlueShield lenses block more than 95% of the blue light range that is associated with age-related macular degeneration, plus an average of 85% of the generally harmful blue light range. They allow more than 98% of the “good” blue light range that is associated with regulating circadian rhythm.
ECPs need only stock a small number of lenses in a few bases to be able to cover the entire FastGrind range: -9.00 to +8.00, up to 3.00 cylinder.
At Vision Expo, Super Optical will also be accepting pre-sale orders for its new FastCoat in-office hardcoater.

More Blue Defense
Digital Eye Lab (DEL), a division of ABB Optical Group, has expanded its bluDEFENSE technology portfolio to include four lens materials—polycarbonate, 1.60, 1.67, and 1.74—in almost any lens design offered by the company.
BluDEFENSE is a blue light control technology that is built into the lens monomer (not a coating). It allows beneficial blue light rays to pass through while absorbing and filtering the rays in the damaging blue-violet range, according to DEL. It blocks 100% of harmful blue light at 420 nanometers, with minimal lens tint.
In addition to the new lens materials, DEL will continue offering its CLARIS bluDEFENSE Anti-Reflective Coating, which reflects harmful blue light, maintains the transparency of the lens, and reduces scatter for better vision and clarity.

On-Trend Mirrors
The Kodak sun lens line from Signet Armorlite is keeping up with consumer trends by adding a collection of colored mirror lenses to the collection. The lenses are available in a gray polarized polycarbonate with four mirror color options: blue, red, silver, and green.
The sunwear package includes backside Kodak Clean&CleAR UV lens coating and a hydrophobic coating that repels water and resists oily smudges, dust, and dirt to make cleaning easy.
The sun lenses are available in three lens designs: Kodak Unique HD lens, Kodak Unique lens, and Kodak Digital Single Vision lens.
As part of the Kodak Lens Professional Series, Kodak Sun Lens mirrors are available exclusively to independent ECPs.

Lensometer With Special Powers!
New to Coburn Technologies’ Huvitz line of diagnostic equipment is the HLM-9000 lensometer, which, in addition to its wavefront analysis technology, can measure the blue light transmittance of any lens.
Its Blue Light Hazard Measurement function measures the transmittance of blue light as well as UV. The Hartmann sensor maximizes accuracy in wavefront analysis, while the automatic lens recognition technology provides accurate and efficient measurement of multifocal lenses, prism, and even sunglasses. An optional contact lens jig allows the contact lenses to be measured as well.
In addition to showing the HLM-9000, Coburn Technologies will also be launching its new HPE-8000X edger at Vision Expo.

EMR Integration
ZEISS Vision Care announces that its Essential Line of digital refraction instruments is now integrated with the leading EMR software systems on the market—including Compulink, Crystal, OfficeMate, ExamWrite, My Vision Express, OD Link, Practice Director, and Revolution HER.
ECPs can now send data wirelessly from the digital refraction instruments to their compatible EMR software for a more streamlined workflow. A key benefit, according to ZEISS, is that data from the instruments is integrated as the patient goes through the exam, keeping it at the doctor’s fingertips (and stored in the cloud for access).
The Essential Line of instruments includes VISULENS 500 Auto Lensmeter, i.Profilerplus Aberrometer/Topographer, VISUREF 100 Autorefractor/Keratometer, VISUSCREEN 100/500 Acuity Systems, and VISUPHOR 500 digital phoropter.

Rebranded Poly
PFO Global is celebrating the relaunch and rebranding of its Resolution by Optima polycarbonate lenses with a new logo and a nationwide photo contest that coincides with the company’s “My Resolution Moments” campaign. The winner of the contest will be announced at Vision Expo West.
Resolution lenses are manufactured using a patented Extrusion Compression Molding process, which eliminates birefringence (manufacturing-induced stress distortion) in the lens. They come with Tantium, a scratch-resistant, nontintable coating to provide durability.
The aspheric design of the lenses results in a flatter lens and helps to eliminate any distortion around the edges, according to the company. The poly material provides impact protection in a thinner and lighter material than 1.60, and is safe for drill mounts with no cracking.

EGMA, LLC, a full-service digital optical lab and U.S. manufacturer of Rodenstock lenses, is now offering UV+420cut, a blue light blocking lens. The lens material (not a coating) of the UV+420cut blocks the harmful blue light from entering the wearer’s eyes, according to EGMA, and does so without a blue reflection or a yellowish lens color.
The new UV+420cut material will be offered in all of EGMA’s single-vision, office, and progressive designs through the complete range of the X100, X300, and X500 Lens Series, and will be available in the following indices: PolyVex 1.56 (impact-resistant mid-index), plastic 1.61, plastic 1.67, and plastic 1.74.
The lenses can also be ordered with any of EGMA’s coatings: CLEARX premium AR coating or Metalix Mirror Coating with CLEARX Premium AR on the back (available in gold, silver, and blue).
