Online contact lens retailer 1-800 Contacts has entered an agreement to acquire consumer vision technology company 6over6 Vision Ltd., founded in 2014. The acquisition is expected to close before the end of December 2019.
6over6’s GlassesOn platform was designed to allow consumers to complete vision-related tests at home via mobile devices, including optical parameters from existing lenses and measuring pupillary distance. On the 6over6 website, the company shares that “GlassesOn is registered as a Class 1 Exempt Medical Device on the FDA Medical Device Listings. However, GlassesOn does not provide medical advice, and does not replace a full eye health exam.”
1-800 Contacts announced it will utilize 6over6’s technology across a variety of its existing businesses and products, including ExpressExam, which currently allows users to confirm their prescriptions for contacts with a computer or smartphone.
“We have long admired the innovations 6over6 has built and have been using their technologies to serve our customers. This expected acquisition allows us to continue our 25-year commitment to pursuing a better way in vision care,” says John Graham, CEO of 1-800 Contacts. “People deserve simple and affordable eye care solutions and acquiring 6over6 will allow us to deliver this for our customers on an even larger scale.”
