  • Online Vision Test Recalled by FDA

    August 23, 2019 -- The FDA has issued a recall notice for the online refractive vision test developed by Chicago-based Visibly (formerly known as Opternative), and the test is no longer being offered on its website. The FDA found that Visibly is in violation of federal law by not receiving necessary FDA premarket approval.

    August 16, 2019 -- The Vision Council is alerting its members that Chinese-origin spectacle lenses, spectacle frames, sunglasses, reading glasses, eyeglasses, safety glasses, goggles, and many low vision devices will be subject to an additional 10% tariff starting Sept. 1 and Dec. 15.

Earlier this month, the company announced it was “in talks” with HAL about the acquisition.

    May 24, 2019 -- Safilo Group announces that it has reached an agreement to sell the U.S. retail chain Solstice to Fairway, LLC, a U.S.-based limited liability company.     January 16, 2019 -- Wisconsin-based general merchandise retail chain Shopko (with many locations housing an in-store optical) filed for bankruptcy today and announced the closing of 38 stores nationwide. The chain announced, however, the four freestanding optical centers that Shopko opened in 2018 will remain open, and the company plans to relocate 20 other in-store optical centers to freestanding optical locations in 2019.
