When kids look up to their parents, they may see their own eyewear looking back at them. Father/son and mother/daughter styles are strong in optical and in sunglass models as well.

Looks that are tempting parents have been trimmed down to fit kids, often with softening details such as peppy graphics and color choices.

There are major trends that lend themselves to intergenerational design chosen for style and for function.

RETRO: Adults have embraced retro styling and kids have followed suit. The geeked-out looks for 2013 include softened club master takes in rich, vibrant colors.

SPORTS: Kids are getting much more into high-performance sports at younger ages and their eyewear is stepping up to the plate in terms of style and performance features as well as safety coverage.

Kids’ Spring Styles

According to KidsStyleSource.com, kids are getting bright and fun for spring 2013, including the following trends:

1. SATURATED BRIGHT COLORS. Bold hues such as teal, coral, lime, orange, neons, and ocean blue add a tropical blast to the design palette.

2. INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCES. Native American, Mexican, South American, and Indian influences will be felt in kids’ clothing designs with graphic designs inspired by indigenous cultures and organic patterns.

3. RETRO. Though they probably can’t watch “Mad Men,” kids’ clothes are being influenced by the ongoing design-inspiring program with classic looks in shift dresses of crisp cotton.

4. VICTORIAN. Luxe details are distilled for the younger set with lace insets and detailed trim.

5. ORGANICS. Nature influences kids’ clothing in flowing shapes, natural colors, and floral motifs.

FAMILY FASHION

According to a poll by Highlights Parents, kids have a strong voice when it comes to style.

When asked about who picks kids’ clothes when shopping:

70 percent Reported both parent and child
22 percent Child
23 percent Parent

In cases where parents and kids disagree about choices, the reasons vary:

51 percent Too expensive
50 percent Impractical
35 percent Not appropriate for that child’s age
29 percent “Sending the wrong message”

What are the major influencers of kids clothes choices:

62 percent Individual taste
10 percent Media
10 percent Peers
10 percent What’s available
8 percent Fashion

Interestingly, kids aren’t the only ones in the home getting fashion advice. Highlights reports that 59 percent of parents say their kids make clothing suggestions for them.

SUN: Sunglasses are getting shrunken down to fit youngsters, usually with color choices that add a lighter, more juvenile touch to grown up classics such as wayfarers and Jackie O looks.

PATTERN PLAY: The shapes on many eyewear styles that are offered in adult and children’s sizes are exactly the same, but on a different scale. The patterns, however, are often a dividing line, where color blocking is softer for kids and the shapes and logos used in the frame décor of the kids’ versions are more fun and youthful. EB
